Building a better camera phone - the Sony Ericsson Cyber-Shot range

By: Matt Sharp

The world of camera-equipped mobile phones has a lot of examples, but one of the most well-represented manufacturers is Sony Ericsson, thanks to their brilliant Cyber-Shot range. In fact, there's a camera phone for every user!
Sony Ericsson K850i - the previous king of camera-equipped mobile phones
Released at the tail end of 2007, Sony Ericsson entered the 5 megapixel battle with the K850i, the first one of their mobile phones to come with a 5 megapixel camera. Of course, it was so much more than that, because it was a Cyber-Shot mobile phone. And that meant it wasn't just about how many megapixels Sony Ericsson could cram into it. So, it also came with autofocus, image stabiliser and most crucially, a proper xenon flash (something limited to only the most top-end mobile phones). All of that made it an awesome camera phone, but Sony Ericsson had one last trick up their sleeves, to turn it into the king of camera-equipped mobile phones. They gave the K850i support for their own Memory Stick Micro memory cards, but also for microSD cards, giving you two options for extra storage. No other mobile phones offer that, and it really is a top-end feature. It's things like that that made the Sony Ericsson K850i the king of camera phones in late-2007/early-2008.
Sony Ericsson C902 - the 5 megapixel mobile phone for the masses
The K850i was the flagship camera-equipped mobile phone from October 2007 up until... well, up until now, really, as it still sits right in the top echelon of Sony Ericsson's range. But the thing is... 5 megapixel camera phones are rapidly extending down into the mid-range, which is why the Sony Ericsson C902 is now on the scene. This brings Cyber-Shot technology to those who want a nice mobile phone, but don't necessarily want the absolute top-end of the range. So, for those users, there is the Sony Ericsson C902. It has the same 5 megapixel sensor, and all the Cyber-Shot technology like autofocus, but it doesn't have a xenon flash (it has a super-powerful LED instead) and it only has the one memory card slot (Memory Stick Micro), instead of two. That said, it's still a wonderfully powerful handset, and it bloodies the nose of many other mobile phones, even some top-end ones!
However, since the C902 is going to be Sony Ericsson's mid-range 5 megapixel mobile phone, and the K850i is getting a bit long in the tooth, what is going to be their new flagship camera phone...?
Sony Ericsson C905 - probably the best camera phone in the world
Recently, the Sony Ericsson is poised to take its place as the brand new Cyber-Shot flagship. And why is that? Well, how about the fact that of all the mobile phones that are in the UK, the C905 is the first one to be announced that has an EIGHT megapixel camera! That's right. Eight. That's huge! And of course, Sony Ericsson don't just rely on the number of megapixels they can squeeze into it, because this is another one of those mobile phones to carry the magical Cyber-Shot badge. And that means, once again, autofocus, image stabiliser and a xenon flash. This time, however, it always means something else, because the Sony Ericsson C905 has joined the ranks of mobile phones that have face recognition, just like digital cameras, giving you perfect portrait photos every time. Basically, combine that all together, and you come to an inescapable conclusion: the Sony Ericsson C905 will be one of the best camera-equipped mobile phones ever made!
