Broke or Poor? One is Temporary and One is Forever

By: Judy H. Wright

Flat Broke. Wow, that is not a good place to be Right now, it seems to be a popular place inhabited by lots of nice people who didn't ask or deserve to be there.

But it is a place, and you can move from one place to another place. Broke means having no money to spend (right now), totally bankrupt and insolvent (right now).

To be broke is to me the opposite of resilient, or flexible. Broken can be mended and frequently is better and stronger than before.

Poor is a state of mind. It is seeing no options and having little or no (known) skills. Poor is defined in the dictionary as not of good quality, inferior or in bad condition. It also means weak and lacking strength, power, stamina or resilience. A poor person has a low opinion of himself and sees his life as deficient in something.

I like to think that deficiency is in hope and faith.
Being poor is not a place, but an attitude that lives inside the soul of a human who has given up on life and his ability to make a change.

Temporary or Lifelong Condition?

"Broke" or in "in debt" is a temporary condition. It does not have to become a lifestyle. My friend, Susan McMann, BS, MA, an empowerment coach teaches; "Debt is not something we're IN (unless we choose to be), it's something we HAVE, from time to time. If we're not IN it, there is no need to get OUT of it.

Alternatively, there are times when we choose to HAVE debt, and times when we choose to be debt-free. For those of you who would like to come up for air, it's relatively easy to liquidate debt, once the decision is made to do so."

Problem Solve the Answer

Nobody wants to be broke or "broken." But, as difficult as it is, it still provides an opportunity for creative problem solving.

One can look at his situation and say, "This stinks, I don't want to do this ever again. What do I have to do to dig myself out of this hole? What options do I have or can I create? How do I draw upon the resiliency of my soul to start over? What are my choices, options and avenues to begin today to make a better life?"

Accept the Verdict

On the other hand, one can choose to accept the condition of being poor but the consequence for that choice is an erosion of your spirit and attitude If you see yourself as poor, and coming from a place of fear and hardship, you will always be poor.

Someone once said that the best thing you can do for the poor, is not be one of them. That isn't unloving or judgmental; it is a statement of not accepting poverty as inevitable or unchanging.

Thoughts Form into Words

Our thoughts turn to words, our words turn to actions, our actions turn to habits and our habits turn into a life-either well lived or lived up.

If all you think and talk about is being poor, you will draw more and more negative situations and pessimistic people to you.

If, on the other hand, you look at what you have learned and what to do next time you are given an opportunity, they will come your way. Doors will open and teachers will appear.

Being broke is not a life sentence; it is just a temporary setback on your journey. A poor attitude and low expectations is a life sentence to worry, fear, anxiety and discouragement.

It's Okay to be Broke

We are all broke some time in our lives; financially, spiritually or physically. The trick is to get out as soon as possible, learn the lesson and move on.
